Ladakh approves 4% government job reservation for sportspersons

Ladakh has approved a 4 per cent horizontal reservation for outstanding sportspersons in direct recruitment for Group ‘C’ non-gazetted government posts. This move, sanctioned by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, makes Ladakh the first and only Union Territory in India to implement a fixed, statutory reservation specifically for athletes in government employment.

The reservation is part of the Ladakh Sports Policy 2026 and applies horizontally across all vertical reservation categories, including General, SC, ST, OBC, and EWS. This structure ensures that selected candidates are adjusted within their respective social categories.

To qualify as an 'Outstanding Sportsperson,' individuals must have represented their state or country in recognized national or international competitions. Eligible candidates also include medal winners from Senior and Junior National Championships, as well as those who have achieved success in Khelo India Youth, Winter, Para, and University Games. Additionally, eligible chess players meeting Department of Personnel and Training provisions and athletes who have represented their universities in recognized inter-university competitions are included in the framework.
