Ladakh declared India’s first fully organic Union Territory
Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has officially declared Ladakh India’s first 100 percent organic Union Territory. This milestone aims to protect the fragile Himalayan ecosystem through sustainable, chemical-free agriculture.
The transition follows a July 2026 order that banned the procurement, distribution, sale, and use of chemical and synthetic fertilizers across the region. To support the shift, the administration distributed organic fertilizers to villages ahead of the sowing season.
Key initiatives include pilot saffron cultivation using 90,000 Iranian corms planted at Spituk Pharka in Leh. The organic status is expected to increase the value of local produce such as apricots, sea buckthorn, buckwheat, barley, and vegetables by providing access to premium markets.
