Ladakh diverts 90 million litres of glacier water daily for irrigation

In Ladakh, a new initiative has successfully diverted 90 million litres of glacier water per day for irrigation purposes. Previously, this runoff from the Stok village Nallah near Leh flowed untapped into the River Indus.

By utilizing earthwork to channelise the water into the Igoo-Phey Irrigation Canal, the project aims to support nearly 12 villages and provide irrigation to over 1,000 acres of previously parched land. The project was spearheaded by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena and was implemented by the Irrigation and Flood Control Department without incurring capital expenditure.
