Ladakh rolls out India's inaugural high‑altitude wildlife safari

The Union Territory of Ladakh will launch India’s first high‑altitude wildlife safari after approval by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. The venture is managed by the newly formed Snow Leopard and High‑Altitude Nature (SHAN) Conservation Society and will operate guided jeep tours using specially designed open‑back vehicles.

Safaris will traverse Hemis National Park, Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary, Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary and key wildlife‑rich zones such as Nubra, Zanskar, Sham, Kargil and Drass. The program focuses on snow‑leopard sightings and bird‑watching, with 20 local youths trained in bird identification and ten bird‑watching hides built. By involving local drivers and guides, the initiative aims to curb illegal off‑roading, protect fragile mountain ecosystems and generate sustainable livelihoods for Ladakh’s communities.
