Ladakh to hold municipal elections in Leh and Kargil on November 21

Ladakh Chief Electoral Officer Rahul Sharma has announced that municipal elections for the Leh and Kargil districts will be held on November 21, 2026. This marks the first urban local body polls in the Union Territory since its formation in 2019, following an administrative vacuum caused by the expiration of previous elected bodies' terms in 2023.

The elections will cover 38 wards in total, consisting of 21 wards in Leh and 17 wards in Kargil. The electoral rolls were published on October 22, with October 1 serving as the qualifying date for voters.

The election schedule includes the issuance of official notifications on October 29, with the deadline for filing nominations set for November 5. Following the scrutiny of nominations on November 6, candidates have until November 9 to withdraw. The allotment of election symbols and the final list of contesting candidates will also be finalized on November 9. The entire election process is expected to conclude by November 30. The Model Code of Conduct has come into force with immediate effect.
