Ladakh’s first medical college in Leh to open in 2027–28

Ladakh’s first Government Medical College in Leh is scheduled to become operational for the 2027–28 academic year. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has approved a phased recruitment process for 103 sanctioned regular posts.

Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena secured a one-time relaxation from the standard requirement that 80 per cent of a college's infrastructure must be completed before faculty and staff recruitment can begin. This allows the administration to initiate preparatory recruitment while construction of the dedicated academic infrastructure continues.

As an interim arrangement, two newly constructed buildings will serve as the academic block and student hostels. The existing 200-bedded Sonam Norbu Memorial (SNM) Hospital in Leh will provide clinical training for the initial batch of MBBS students until permanent facilities are completed.
