Ladera Ranch HOA rejects total pesticide ban amid rare cancer cluster concerns

The Ladera Ranch Maintenance Corporation (LARMAC) has rejected calls to implement a total ban on pesticides in the Orange County, California, community. The decision follows reports of a rare cancer cluster in the area, with residents identifying between 9 and 12 cases of Ewing sarcoma and synovial sarcoma, including at least six deaths.

While the five-member HOA board approved expanding pesticide-free zones and studying alternatives, they cited cost concerns regarding a transition to organic landscaping. Residents noted that the association currently spends approximately $44,000 per month on certified landscaping, though advocates argue the board has not sought competitive bids for organic management.

Local advocacy groups, including Protect Ladera and Ladera Goes Organic, are pushing for stricter precautions. One resident reported developing severe skin itching after walking through an area where herbicides were recently applied. The California Department of Public Health is currently investigating whether cancer rates in the community are occurring at higher-than-expected levels.
