Health officials and federal prosecutors are investigating a cluster of rare Ewing sarcoma cases in Ladera Ranch, a suburb in Orange County, California. The California Department of Public Health’s California Cancer Registry is conducting a review to determine if the incidence of this rare bone and soft tissue cancer in the community is higher than expected based on population data.

Residents have expressed significant concern regarding the potential environmental causes of the cluster, specifically pointing to the frequent application of local herbicides and pesticides. While researchers are conducting environmental soil and water sampling, public health experts note that establishing a direct link between environmental factors and Ewing sarcoma remains scientifically challenging, as there are currently no known lifestyle or environmental causes for the disease.
