Ladera Ranch researchers investigate rare cancer cluster

Researchers from California State University, Fullerton have begun environmental testing in Ladera Ranch, an affluent community in Orange County, following reports of a cancer cluster. The investigation focuses on three local parks to determine if environmental factors are linked to several cases of Ewing sarcoma, a rare bone and soft-tissue cancer that primarily affects children and teenagers.

While a 2024 county-level review found no unusual patterns, officials noted that limited data necessitated a more focused assessment. The community's residents have expressed significant concern, with some calling on the homeowners association to cease pesticide use. During a recent Ladera Ranch Maintenance Corporation meeting, residents discussed land-management practices and the potential impact of pesticides.

Professor Daniel Curtis of the university’s chemistry department noted that proving causation is difficult and that the cause may not be environmental. Researchers expect to receive initial test results as early as the end of this week. Ewing sarcoma accounts for approximately 1% of childhood cancers, with roughly 225 diagnoses annually according to Johns Hopkins.
