Ladysmith's Royal Canadian Legion celebrates 100th anniversary

The Royal Canadian Legion, founded nationally in November 1925, marked its centennial in 2025. In Ladysmith, British Columbia, the local branch – Royal Canadian Legion Branch 171, established in 1943 by World War I veterans – held its annual social and picnic at the town amphitheatre.

The branch, now about 350 members strong, is led by Darlene Paulson, who noted this is her eighth term as president. To encourage new members, the national Dominion announced free enrollment for the centennial year. The Legion continues its community work, donating to Girl Guides, hospitals, Air Cadets and the local food bank, as well as awarding bursaries to high‑school graduates. Its historic hall, built by members in 1953 after moving from earlier locations, also serves as a bar and gathering place on weekends.
