Lafayette pedestrian killed in fatal vehicle collision
A 37-year-old man from New Market, Iowa, died Saturday evening after being struck by a vehicle in Lafayette. The victim, identified by the Lafayette Police Department as Cody Sanson, was attempting to cross East University Avenue in the 900 block around 7 p.m.
Preliminary investigations suggest Sanson was looking at his phone while walking across the street in an area with poor lighting and no designated crosswalk. He entered the path of a southbound vehicle, which struck him and caused severe injuries. He was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital.
Police confirmed that driver impairment was not a factor in the collision. The crash caused the closure of East University Avenue between Harding Street and Coolidge Street while investigators processed the scene.
