Lafayette police investigate human remains found at demolished hotel

Lafayette police are investigating after a construction crew discovered the severely decomposed body of a male during the demolition of a former La Quinta Inn on the Northeast Evangeline Thruway. The discovery occurred around 6:08 p.m. on Thursday. Investigators stated they do not believe the demolition process caused the man’s death.

The identity of the deceased and the cause of death are currently unknown, pending an autopsy by the Lafayette Parish Coroner’s Office. Authorities have not confirmed if foul play is suspected.

The vacant hotel had been empty for nearly two years and was frequently used by unhoused individuals. The property had been a source of safety and trespassing concerns for the Lafayette Consolidated Government, which condemned the building in January. The demolition is part of a local initiative led by Mayor-President Monique Boulet to clear blighted and dangerous properties throughout the parish.
