Lagadas Municipality to receive €42 million for sewage infrastructure

The Greek Ministry of National Economy and Finance has issued a call for proposals to fund urban wastewater management infrastructure in the Lagadas Municipality. The project, part of the ‘Environment and Climate Change’ 2021-2027 program, involves €42 million in co-financed public spending.

The initiative consists of two main components: upgrading and expanding the existing Lagadas Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) to increase its capacity, and constructing new sewage networks in the settlements of Lagyna, Kavalaris, and Assiros. Once completed, these improvements will allow the municipality and the three surrounding settlements to comply with EU Directive 91/271/EEC, which requires settlements with over 2,000 inhabitants to have biological wastewater treatment.

Lagadas Mayor Niki Andreou described the development as a significant step for environmental protection and public health, noting it is the result of systematic efforts by the municipal authority. The project is expected to serve approximately 8,000 residents, with 6,970 people benefiting from a modern biological purification system.
