Lagadas students and parents protest over school building status

Students, parents, and members of the educational community in Lagadas held a protest and march on Tuesday, September 22, to demand an immediate solution for the school's housing crisis. The demonstrations follow a recent meeting of the Central Council of Modern Monuments, which failed to reach a final decision regarding the potential designation of the old 1st Gymnasium building as a protected monument.

The school building has been sealed since 2021 due to structural instability, including roof subsidence, wall moisture, and ongoing floor sinking. While the Municipality of Lagadas has secured €8,870,000 in funding for a new school complex scheduled for completion in late 2028, the current lack of suitable land and the monument designation debate have left students in temporary container classrooms.

Lagadas Mayor Niki Andreou joined the protesters, stating that while cultural heritage must be respected, equal respect must be shown to the children's need for safe, modern, and secure educational facilities.
