Lages authorities investigate discovery of dozens of dead dogs in trash bags

Dozens of dead dogs were discovered inside closed trash bags along an old highway in the Santa Clara neighborhood of Lages, Santa Catarina. The remains were found in advanced stages of decomposition, with some bodies already skeletal, which has complicated efforts by the Scientific Police to determine the exact cause of death.

The discovery was made following a report regarding the abandonment of live animals. The incident mobilized animal welfare teams, the Civil Police, the Scientific Police, and the Lages City Hall, which provided heavy machinery to assist in the removal of the remains. The remains were subsequently buried at the site. The 1st Police Station of Lages is investigating the case to identify those responsible and determine if environmental crimes or animal cruelty occurred.
