Lago Maggiore low water levels reveal WWII grenade in Baveno

A World War II grenade was discovered on the shoreline of Villa Fedora beach in Baveno on Sunday, August 16. The discovery was made possible by record-low water levels in Lago Maggiore, which has dropped to approximately -45 centimeters.

Local authorities, including the Carabinieri, Baveno local police, and Mayor Alessandro Monti, responded to the scene. A portion of the beach has been cordoned off to protect residents and tourists. Bomb disposal experts are expected to arrive in the coming days to inspect and safely detonate the ordnance.

The receding waters of the lake have been exposing various objects that have remained submerged for decades, prompting officials to warn the public not to approach or touch any suspicious objects found on the lakebed.
