Lagos APC Names Hamzat, Sonayon-James for 2027 Gubernatorial Race

Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu of Lagos announced that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will field Deputy Governor Dr Obafemi Hamzat as its candidate for the 2027 Lagos governorship election, with Princess Damilola Sonayon‑James as his running mate. The announcement was made on Sanwo‑Olu’s verified X account and emphasized the pair’s experience, competence and commitment to sustainability, youth empowerment and community development.

Sanwo‑Olu said, “The true test of sustainable governance is the ability to pass the baton to proven hands, guided by minds that see the future clearly,” and praised Hamzat as a “dedicated public servant, a dependable partner in governance and a steadfast advocate for progress.” He described Sonayon‑James as “a respected leader, sustainability professional, and grassroots champion.” The governor urged party members, stakeholders and all Lagosians to support the ticket as the APC seeks to retain control of the state. Hamzat secured 657,917 out of 657,974 accredited votes in the party primary held on May 21, defeating challenger Lanre Jim‑Kamal, who received a single vote.
