Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to affect 147 structures

The Nigerian Federal Government has announced that 147 structures in Lagos will be affected by the construction of the service lane for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. President Bola Tinubu, represented by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, stated that while five structures are slated for full demolition, the remaining 142 will experience minimal impact. The President assured affected property owners that compensation would be provided at the appropriate time.

To protect the multi-billion-naira infrastructure project, Minister of Works David Umahi has inaugurated the Coastal Highway Guards. An initial deployment of 40 officers, led by retired General Adekunle Shodunke, will provide round-the-clock security. The guards are tasked with preventing vandalism, such as the removal of reinforcement rods, as well as monitoring illegal occupation, hawking, and the unauthorized use of motorcycles and tricycles on the highway.

This initiative follows reports of unpatriotic activities, including individuals sleeping on sections of the highway and the destruction of fences and blocks. The project is being executed by Hitech Construction Company Limited under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Works.
