Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat addresses waste crisis and 2027 goals

Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has outlined his development priorities and addressed the state’s growing waste management crisis. As the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the 2027 governorship election, Hamzat pledged to focus on healthcare, infrastructure, housing, and education to improve the quality of life for residents.

Addressing the state’s waste management struggles, Hamzat noted that daily refuse generation has significantly exceeded previous government projections. While the state initially estimated 13,000 tonnes of waste per day, actual figures are closer to 17,000 tonnes. He attributed the difficulties facing the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to this unprecedented scale, a lack of functional collection trucks, and operational hurdles for private contractors. Hamzat emphasized the need for accurate data to effectively plan and manage the state’s sanitation challenges.
