Lagos e-hailing drivers begin indefinite strike over fares

E-hailing drivers in Lagos State have launched an indefinite strike to protest current fare structures, commissions, deductions, and general welfare concerns. The industrial action is being led by the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress.

The union stated that the strike was necessary because persistent concerns regarding operational policies, safety, security, and the sustainability of their operations remained unresolved despite previous attempts to engage stakeholders. The strike is set to continue until satisfactory progress is made in addressing these grievances.

AUATON has appealed to fleet owners and managers to provide temporary relief from daily remittance obligations and operational targets during the strike, noting that drivers will not be generating revenue during this period. The union also requested that fleet partners refrain from imposing penalties or sanctions on drivers participating in the action. A task force will be deployed across all local government areas in Lagos to monitor compliance, and drivers found operating in violation of the strike may face internal disciplinary measures.
