Lagos expands health coverage with insurance enrollment and free medical outreach

Ojokoro Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Lagos sponsored 1,000 residents—and 400 local staff—into the Lagos State Health Insurance Scheme, aiming to lower out‑of‑pocket costs and broaden universal health coverage. Council Chairman Oluyemisi Rosiji said, "Healthcare is a right, not a privilege," and the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) plans to set up an enrollment desk within the LCDA to ease future registrations.

Separately, the Smiley Caring Foundation, founded by entrepreneur Olawale Gbadamosi Ojoye, carried out a free medical outreach in Mushin, Lagos. The programme provided free consultations, tests, medications, health education, food parcels and donated over 100 mattresses and other relief items to vulnerable households and care facilities. Ojoye emphasized the effort was "100 per cent not political" and fully self‑funded, aiming to bring hope to underserved residents of his hometown.
