Lagos faces severe traffic congestion and waste management crises

Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, is facing severe urban challenges driven by rapid population growth and infrastructure pressure. The city has been identified as the most congested in Africa according to Numbeo’s Traffic Index, recording a traffic index of 348.5 and an average one-way commute time of 68.3 minutes. This congestion places significant strain on the city’s road networks and daily economic activity.

Compounding these mobility issues is a growing waste management crisis. Massive amounts of daily refuse accumulate in streets and residential areas, frequently clogging drainage channels. This buildup of plastic and organic waste leads to severe flooding during rainy periods, which disrupts transportation, damages property, and creates public health risks by attracting pests and creating stagnant water.
