Lagos fire destroys two buildings in Itire, rescues elderly man

A fire destroyed an eight-room bungalow and partially damaged an adjoining two-storey residential building in the Itire area of Lagos on Monday night. The incident occurred at 43 Onitire Road near Smith Bus Stop.

Firefighters rescued a 75-year-old man from the bungalow. A 42-year-old man sustained burn injuries while attempting to rescue the elderly man, who uses a wheelchair. The injured individual was transported to Gbagada General Hospital by the Lagos State Ambulance Service.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service reported that the emergency call was received at approximately 9:10 p.m., with responders arriving at 9:35 p.m. Preliminary assessments suggest the fire may have been caused by an electrical surge resulting from negligence, though the exact cause is still under investigation.

Controller-General Margaret Adeseye has urged residents to maintain electrical installations properly, avoid overloading sockets, and use qualified electricians to prevent similar incidents.
