Lagos Flooding Causes Widespread Property Damage and Displacement

Heavy torrential rain in Lagos triggered flooding that inundated homes, damaged vehicles and shut down businesses across the metropolis. Residents say a collapsed section of the Nigerian Air Force base perimeter fence blocked a drainage channel, causing floodwaters to spill into streets and homes in the Oshodi area and elsewhere. Victims blamed the fence collapse and inadequate drainage maintenance, asking the state government for relief materials.

The flood turned major roads—including the Lagos‑Ibadan, Lagos‑Abeokuta, Apapa‑Oshodi and Lekki‑Epe expressways—into temporary rivers, stranding commuters for up to six hours and halting commercial activity. A bus driver recounted losing a day's earnings as his vehicle was trapped in rising water. Authorities attributed the flooding to Lagos' low‑lying topography and climate‑change effects, while locals demanded permanent solutions and criticized the government's preparedness.
