Lagos arrests 27 suspects for vandalizing Festac-Alakija Bridge

Lagos State authorities have arrested 27 suspected hoodlums following the vandalism of the Festac-Alakija Bridge, which connects Festac Town to Alakija along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. The suspects were apprehended during a joint midnight enforcement operation conducted by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) task force.

Investigations revealed that the vandals targeted critical structural components, including iron rods, steel reinforcements, cables, and other materials essential to the bridge's integrity. Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab described the act as a threat to public safety that undermines government investment in infrastructure.

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu inspected the damaged bridge pillars at Vin-Niger to assess the situation. He assured the public that, despite the removal of some fittings and the excavation of parts of the structure, the bridge's structural integrity remains intact and safe for use. The Governor condemned the vandalism as "barbaric and criminal" and vowed to prosecute both the perpetrators and those involved in the illegal trade of stolen public infrastructure materials.
