Lagos Governor Sanwo-Olu addresses UN climate meeting with California Governor Newsom

Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu addressed the United Nations High-level Meeting on Climate Action and the Just Transition during the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly. Appearing alongside California Governor Gavin Newsom, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the necessity of international partnerships to combat the climate crisis.

The joint appearance follows a recent visit by the Lagos Governor to Sacramento to mark a Sister State Resolution between California and Lagos. Sanwo-Olu highlighted that for a population of over 22 million, climate action must be integrated with development to address threats such as flooding, rising sea levels, and extreme urban heat. He stated that climate action is about “turning ambition into opportunity” by protecting citizens and strengthening the economy.
