Lagos High Court halts demolition at disputed Broad Street property

A Lagos State High Court has issued a pre-emptive order to halt all demolition and construction activities at a disputed property located at 168 Broad Street, Lagos Island. The ruling by Justice Yetunde Adesanya follows a 48-hour quit notice issued by the Lagos Island Local Government, which had ordered occupiers to vacate the premises and remove structures deemed illegal.

The legal intervention comes amid allegations from the property’s purported owner, Dr. Abimbola Adebowale, that the site was partially demolished and subsequently seized by Taiwo Ige Yusuf. The applicant claims that Yusuf has begun preparations to develop the land and has forcefully ejected tenants from the premises.

United Capital Trustee Limited, which has managed the property since 2016, filed an affidavit stating that the recent encroachments and demolitions could cause irreparable damage before the necessary pre-action protocols are completed.
