Lagos-Ibadan Expressway tanker spill draws residents to scoop fuel
Dozens of residents gathered along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Saturday to collect spilled petroleum from a tanker near the Ibadan-Ijebu-Ode Road. Witnesses reported seeing men and women using buckets, jerrycans, and other containers to scoop fuel from the highway and nearby drainage channels.
The incident prompted an emergency response from the Federal Road Safety Corps and both Federal and State Fire Services. Officials worked to secure the area and contain the spill to mitigate the high risk of fire or explosion caused by the accumulation of fuel in an open environment.
While the cause of the tanker spill has not been established and no casualties were immediately reported, the event highlights a recurring danger on Nigerian roads where residents often attempt to collect spilled fuel despite significant risks to life and property.
