Lagos man drowns following alleged chase by suspected cultists

A man identified as Opeyemi drowned in a river in the Agility area of Mile 12, Lagos State, following an incident on Saturday, September 12.

Police sources report that Opeyemi was allegedly being chased and attacked by a group of individuals, suspected to be cultists, while on his way to purchase an item. According to these reports, he jumped into the river to evade his attackers. Witnesses claimed that bystanders attempted to rescue him, but the attackers prevented them from doing so.

Conflicting accounts have emerged regarding the cause of the drowning. The anti-cultism advocacy platform Naija Confra noted that while some residents alleged a violent pursuit, other residents claimed Opeyemi may have been under the influence of a substance and entered the river of his own accord. The exact circumstances of the death remain unverified.
