Lagos officials seek deeper Nigeria-Britain energy cooperation

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and economic stakeholders are advocating for enhanced energy cooperation between Nigeria and Britain. Speaking at the 26th Annual Lecture Series of the Nigeria-Britain Association, officials emphasized the need for collaboration in trade, technology, and skills to bolster energy security and support Nigeria’s transition to cleaner power.

Lagos State is currently implementing embedded power generation to improve electricity reliability. The state has signed power purchase agreements for embedded plants, with capacity expected to reach between 2,000 and 4,000 megawatts within two to three years. Notable projects include a 12.16-megawatt plant for the Lagos Water Corporation and a 30-megawatt plant under construction in Victoria Island, intended to reduce reliance on diesel generators.

A joint study with C40 Cities indicates that Lagos has the potential to generate approximately 25 gigawatts of local renewable energy by 2050, primarily through solar power and battery storage.
