Lagos Police detain officer after shooting kills two-year-old girl

The Lagos State Police Command has detained Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Omotayo Olajide following a shooting in the Nosamu area of Ajegunle that killed a two-year-old girl, Omole Taiwo, and injured another child.

The incident occurred on the night of Thursday, November 5, 2026, while officers were responding to a distress call regarding a violent clash between two rival groups, the Nosamu Boys and the Alayabiagba Boys. The groups were reportedly fighting over toll collection and were armed with cutlasses and other weapons. During the operation, ASP Olajide discharged his firearm, striking both girls.

The victims were initially taken to Ajeromi General Hospital. Taiwo was later transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where she died. The second girl remains in stable condition and is receiving medical attention.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai visited the bereaved family to offer condolences and stated that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough investigation. The command emphasized that any officer found culpable will face legal and disciplinary action.
