Nigeria police launch nationwide crackdown on vehicles with obscured number plates

On 15 June 2026, police commands in Rivers State, Lagos State and Kogi State began a coordinated enforcement operation targeting vehicles with covered, obscured, defaced, unregistered or missing registration number plates. The drive follows a directive from Inspector‑General of Police Olatunji Disu aimed at enhancing public safety and preventing criminals from concealing their identities.

Rivers State Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju led the first day of the exercise in Port Harcourt, overseeing arrests and a mobile court that processed offenders. In Lagos, Commissioner Tijani Fatai reported the impoundment of about 50 vehicles and urged motorists, transport operators and fleet owners to ensure plates are clearly visible and documents up to date. Kogi State Commissioner Naziru Bello Kankarofi similarly instructed area commanders to enforce compliance, warning that violators will be impounded and investigated.

Police officials stressed that the measures are not intended to inconvenience law‑abiding drivers but to improve vehicle identification, aid crime investigation, and reduce the use of unmarked vehicles in illegal activities such as kidnapping, arms transport and hit‑and‑run incidents. Officers were also warned to avoid extortion during the operation.
