Lagos Police Sergeant killed during stop-and-search in Egbeda
A Lagos State Police sergeant, Johnson Okediji, died after being struck and dragged by a vehicle during a stop-and-search operation in the Egbeda area of Lagos. The incident occurred on Olugbede Street when officers flagged down a Lexus ES 350.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani reported that the driver, identified as Olumide Olushola, initially stopped but then suddenly accelerated as Sergeant Okediji approached the driver’s side. The officer was dragged several metres under the vehicle, sustaining multiple fractures and serious head injuries. He was later pronounced dead on arrival at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.
Olushola was arrested following a pursuit. During a parade at the police command headquarters, the suspect denied intentionally hitting the officer, claiming that the vehicle's brakes failed as he was preparing to stop. The vehicle has been recovered for investigation.
