Lagos political landscape shifts ahead of 2027 elections

Lagos State is becoming a critical political battleground as the 2027 general elections approach. The All Progressives Congress (APC), which has governed the state since 1999, faces increased competition following the 2023 presidential election, where the party narrowly lost the state to Peter Obi of the Labour Party.

To counter rising opposition and public discontent driven by economic hardships and the rising cost of living, the APC is restructuring its campaign operations and conducting a membership drive that has reportedly registered approximately one million new members. Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the party’s governorship candidate, is set to unveil a manifesto aimed at sustaining the state’s development momentum and addressing urban challenges.

With over 7.4 million registered voters, the state remains Nigeria’s largest electorate. Analysts note that the political environment is being shaped by growing youth-led opposition and concerns regarding democratic space, challenging the traditional dominance of the ruling party in what has long been a key political stronghold.
