Lagos power grid expanded with eight new transformers
The Nigerian Federal Government has commissioned eight new power transformers across four key transmission substations in Lagos to address critical electricity bottlenecks. The upgrades target the Apapa Road, Ijora, Alausa, and Lekki substations to improve the evacuation of available electricity generation.
At the Lekki Transmission Substation, the upgrade has effectively doubled capacity at the 330/132/33kV level from 300MVA to 600MVA. The Apapa Road substation saw its capacity tripled from 60MVA to 180MVA following the installation of two 60MVA power transformers and modern gas-insulated switchgear. Other installations include 100MVA transformers at the Ijora and Alausa substations.
Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe stated that these interventions aim to remove electricity constraints and unlock economic growth. The projects were supported by various funding sources, including the World Bank and the Japan International Cooperation Agency. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) expects these improvements to ensure a more reliable power supply to areas such as Apapa Causeway, Ijora, and Amukoko.
