Lagos records 33,009 domestic and sexual violence cases over five years

The Lagos State Government has recorded 33,009 cases of domestic and sexual violence between September 2021 and July 2026. Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Lawal Pedro disclosed the figures during the commencement of the 2026 Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month.

Domestic violence was the most frequent category, accounting for 13,515 cases. Other reported incidents included 1,171 defilement cases, 797 cases of child abuse and physical assault, 420 rape cases, 428 sexual harassment cases, and 100 cases of sexual assault by penetration. Additionally, 10,613 children were identified as having suffered emotional abuse due to exposure to domestic violence in their homes.

Data indicates that women accounted for 88 per cent of reports, while men made up 12 per cent. While reported cases showed a decline from 7,882 in 2024 to 7,721 in 2025, officials warned that lower numbers might reflect changes in reporting awareness rather than a decrease in actual violence. The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has provided legal support, medical care, and psychotherapy to numerous survivors and perpetrators during this period.
