Lagos State Government warns schools against forcing school supply purchases

The Lagos State Government has issued a directive through the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) reminding parents and guardians of their consumer rights regarding school supplies. As schools prepare to reopen, the government stated that educational institutions should not unnecessarily compel parents to purchase approved books, uniforms, or stationery directly from the school.

LASCOPA noted that while schools provide lists of required items after admission, parents should be free to choose alternative suppliers if equivalent, approved products are reasonably available elsewhere, potentially at a lower price. The agency warned against schools that refuse items purchased from outside vendors, stating that such restrictions should not be imposed on families. Parents are encouraged to report any consumer protection concerns to the agency.
