Lagos State Governor approves university staff allowances, ending strike
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved an agreement with staff unions at state-owned universities, leading to the suspension of an indefinite strike. The agreement covers academic and non-academic staff across Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).
Key approvals include a 40% Consolidated Academic Tertiary Institutions Allowance (CATA) and a 10% Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) for academic staff. Additionally, the governor approved monthly allowances of N70,000 for Readers and N145,000 for Professors, alongside a 35% revised allowance for non-academic staff. These payments are effective from January 1, 2026, with arrears to be paid in two tranches alongside October and November 2026 salaries.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) LASUED branch announced that academic activities are scheduled to resume on Monday, October 12, 2026. While the union commended the governor for the approvals, it noted that certain issues remain outstanding, including the provision for life-long salaries for retired professors and discussions regarding the Lagos Factor Allowance.
