Lagos State officials deny widespread diphtheria outbreak

The Lagos State Government has assured residents that there is no widespread outbreak of diphtheria in the state, despite active outbreaks reported in other parts of Nigeria. Health Commissioner Prof. Akin Abayomi stated that while the state has recorded 53 suspected cases and six laboratory-confirmed cases, all confirmed cases were appropriately managed and their contacts were monitored.

Lagos is intensifying surveillance, laboratory testing, and contact tracing due to its high population density and the continuous movement of people between the state and affected regions. Authorities are urging residents to remain calm but vigilant, advising anyone experiencing symptoms such as severe sore throat, fever, difficulty breathing, or neck swelling to seek immediate medical attention and avoid self-medication.

To prevent the spread of the bacterial respiratory infection, officials are emphasizing the importance of immunization. The state currently has a full vaccination coverage of approximately 64 percent. Parents are encouraged to ensure children receive the three-dose pentavalent vaccine. Vaccines are available free of charge at over 1,000 public and private facilities.
