Lagos State targets 3,000MW electricity supply by March 2027
Lagos State aims to increase its electricity supply to over 3,000 megawatts (MW) by March 2027, a significant rise from the current capacity of less than 1,000MW. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the target as part of a strategy to eliminate blackouts and foster a 24-hour power economy.
To achieve this, the state plans to mobilize an additional 2,000MW through various channels, including national grid resources, independent power projects, energy hubs, power barges, energy traders, and embedded generation. The governor’s seven-point action plan includes making the Lagos Electricity Market fully functional, strengthening distribution and transmission infrastructure, improving metering, and securing gas supplies.
In terms of renewable energy, the state has already solarized approximately 42,000 streetlights. Additionally, solar projects have been implemented in 175 public schools, with work continuing in another 100 institutions.
