Lagos State targets 90% flood control success by 2027

The Lagos State Government aims to achieve a 90 to 95 per cent success rate in flood control ahead of the 2027 rainy season. This goal will be pursued through the implementation of resilient infrastructure and continuous, year-round drainage maintenance.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the target following inspections of sites in Oregun, Surulere, and Osborne Foreshore Estate in Ikoyi. Wahab noted that the state has previously achieved between 75 and 80 per cent success in managing floods but is working to improve these figures through enhanced environmental policies and infrastructure.

The Commissioner stated that total elimination of flooding is impossible due to the state's coastal geography, tidal movements, and rising sea levels. To support these efforts, the government is deploying the Emergency Flood Abatement Gang year-round and strengthening environmental regulations, including a ban on Styrofoam and plans to phase out single-use plastics to prevent drainage blockages.
