Lagos State to demolish fire-damaged GNI building
The Lagos State Government has announced the controlled demolition of the Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) building on Lagos Island. The decision follows a structural assessment confirming the fire-ravaged high-rise poses a significant risk to public safety.
The building was gutted by a devastating fire on December 24, 2025, which resulted in the deaths of 12 people. Recovery operations at the site have involved a multi-agency effort including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), which provided heavy-duty equipment.
Authorities have issued a public safety advisory warning residents, traders, and motorists to avoid the area during the operation. Access to the immediate surroundings will be restricted, and temporary traffic diversions are expected on adjoining streets. Officials have urged the public to cooperate with emergency responders and use alternative routes to mitigate the impact of noise, dust, and restricted movement.
