Lagos State University Teaching Hospital criticized after patient death

The death of Olatunde Joseph Ojelabi at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) has highlighted critical shortages in Nigeria’s healthcare system. Ojelabi, 45, sustained severe facial injuries following a road traffic accident on Ijegun Road, Ikotun, after swerving to avoid a commercial tricycle.

After being referred from a private facility due to the severity of his injuries, Ojelabi arrived at the LASUTH Medical Emergency Unit before 9:00 a.m. His family reports that instead of receiving immediate emergency care, he was left outside the emergency ward for more than six hours because medical staff claimed there was “no bed.” The family describes the incident as a preventable death caused by the hospital's inability to provide necessary space and urgent attention.
