Lagos truck accidents claim lives, including mother and child

A mother and her child were killed after two heavily laden 20-foot container trucks overturned near Freeman Market at Mile 2, inward Apapa, Lagos. The victims were trapped beneath the overturned vehicles and their cargo, sustaining fatal injuries. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) deployed cranes and recovery teams to clear the wreckage and divert traffic to prevent further congestion.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki has called for a thorough investigation to determine if the crash was caused by mechanical defects, overloading, improper cargo distribution, or driver negligence. He urged truck operators to ensure vehicles are roadworthy and to comply strictly with safety regulations.

This incident follows a broader trend of heavy-duty vehicle accidents in the region. Data from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) indicates that between January and September 2026, articulated vehicles were involved in 127 emergency responses. Total emergencies handled by the agency during this nine-month period included 206 road traffic accidents, resulting in 78 casualties and 508 injuries.
