Lagos University Teaching Hospital strike enters eighth day, services disrupted
On July 29, 2026, resident doctors at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in Nigeria began their eighth day of industrial action after a directive from the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD). The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at LUTH says the strike will continue until two demands are met: the completion of the long‑delayed Resident Doctors’ Quarters and the restoration of call‑duty meals.
Doctors report living in hospital lounges, cars and other unsuitable places for more than 18 months, saying the lack of accommodation and meals threatens their welfare and patient care. They have appealed to Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate and other officials to release funds needed to finish the renovation and reinstate meals. The ongoing walkout has crippled outpatient and emergency services at the hospital.
