Lagos targets 3,500MW power supply to end electricity blackouts

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Nigerian Federal Government have announced a strategic plan to end persistent blackouts in Lagos by targeting an electricity supply of 3,500 megawatts (MW). During a High-Level Strategic Power Town Hall, officials discussed coordinated actions across generation, transmission, distribution, and metering to achieve a 24-hour power economy.

Federal Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe, represented by Engr. Baba Mustapha, noted that while Lagos requires over 6,000MW, it currently receives significantly less from the national grid. The state aims to add approximately 2GW to the existing supply to reach the 3,500MW goal. Key priorities for this initiative include improving gas supply, upgrading transmission infrastructure, addressing distribution bottlenecks, and implementing smart metering to build consumer confidence and attract investment.
