The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is pursuing disciplinary action, including potential termination, against two air traffic controllers following a fatal collision at New York’s LaGuardia Airport on March 22. Investigations reveal the controllers allegedly left their posts approximately one hour before the end of their shifts, leaving the control tower understaffed during a period of high traffic.

The accident involved an Air Canada Express regional jet, operated by Jazz Aviation, which collided with an airport fire truck on Runway 4. The crash resulted in the deaths of both pilots and left dozens of passengers injured. A preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) identified communication failures and equipment deficiencies as contributing factors, noting that the fire truck lacked a transponder that could have alerted controllers to the collision course.

The National Air Traffic Controllers Association is currently discussing the allegations with FAA leadership. The incident has brought renewed scrutiny to staffing levels and the practice of early shift departures within the national airspace system.
