Laguna Primera de Palos achieves international wetland status
The Laguna Primera de Palos, located in Palos de la Frontera, Huelva, has transitioned from a degraded area to a wetland of international importance. Situated on land owned by the energy company Moeve, the shallow water body is now recognized under the Ramsar Convention and is part of the Natura 2000 network.
The ecological restoration process began in 2001 when technical teams at the energy park identified the site's ecological potential. In coordination with environmental administrations, a long-term project was proposed to the Junta de Andalucía, funded entirely by the company, to recover the area's biodiversity. The initiative serves as a reference for avian protection near the Doñana environment and emphasizes the need for permanent conservation efforts to mitigate pressures from industry and surrounding agriculture.
