Laguna Primera de Palos uses sediments for agriculture and biodiversity

A circular economy project at the Laguna Primera de Palos wetland is utilizing accumulated sediments to support local agriculture and biodiversity. Through a collaboration between Fundación Moeve, the Junta de Andalucía, the Palos de la Frontera City Council, and local farmers, a sediment trap has been constructed to prevent sand and materials carried by rain from reaching and clogging the lagoon.

This infrastructure helps maintain water quality by reducing turbidity and retaining nutrients. The design also incorporates shallow areas and small islands that create new habitats for aquatic birds and other species. To date, more than 4,000 cubic meters of sand and sediment have been removed and repurposed to restore agricultural lands affected by erosion. The City Council provides the extraction machinery, while farmers manage the transport of materials to their farms.

The initiative coincides with the 25th anniversary of the restoration of the Laguna Primera de Palos. The site currently features 30 hectares of restored land and hosted approximately 80 threatened species during 2025.
