Laguna Seca in Fresnillo faces water crisis and mass fish deaths

The Laguna Seca in the municipality of Fresnillo, Zacatecas, is facing a critical water crisis. Despite recent rainfall, the water level is estimated to be at only approximately 18 percent of its capacity.

This shortage has resulted in the death of thousands of fish, leading to strong odors from decomposition. Regulatory and sanitation services have applied lime to the area to mitigate sanitary risks. Local residents noted that the lagoon, once a popular site for recreation and fishing, is now being scavenged by vultures and herons. Some residents suggest that modifications to the natural channel that previously fed the basin may have contributed to the reduced water flow.
